Pop Up Produce 'pops up' at UNC Charlotte's 25th Annual Earth Day!

1970 began a movement with the establishment of Earth Day. This movement shed light on environmental issues and began empowering humanity to start playing a role to positively impact our planet.

For the past 25 years, UNC Charlotte has been participating in celebrating Earth Day, bringing the community together through a variety of events, gatherings and actions. This year, on a chilly, rainy spring day under Colvard's Breezeway, The Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling invited various organizations to show the University population what actions are being done locally to help mitigate environmental issues and impact our environment in a positive and meaningful way.

Between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., Pop Up Produce had the opportunity to share our story, educating students, faculty and staff about the work we’re doing in our community and empowering those interested in volunteering to be a part of our process. Our core team members – myself, Alex (Marketing + Operations Director) and Giana (Social Media Coordinator) – explained the various facets of Pop Up Produce:

  • Grow Food | Grow Community.
  • Fresh Start Kits teach people how to grow their own food, while helping families in food deserts learn how to grow, too.
  • Reduce one’s carbon footprint and link back to our food source by growing your own food.
  • Shed light on various socio-economic issues, address the reality of food deserts locally and nationally, and empower others to help alleviate food deserts and food insecurity.

The University community showed us an overwhelming amount of enthusiasm and loving support for the work we are doing in our community. Over 35 people signed up to join our growing group of volunteers, which is the most we’ve ever received from one event! How exciting! It really takes the power of people coming together for a unified mission to create change and shape our world in an impactful way.
