Health Benefits of Himalayan Salt

If you go on social media, you have probably heard the recent buzz about Himalayan Salt Lamps. You probably thought to yourself, what’s so cool about them? My normal lamp gets the job done just fine. Little did you know, Himalayan Salt Lamps aren’t just good for lighting up your room, there are also many health benefits to them.

Salt lamps are made from pure pink Himalayan salt. They are often found with a bulb in the center, or with several crystals in a basket. These salt lamps give off a very calming pinkish orange glow to them. Dating back many years ago, Europeans have been known to use salt for a sense of rejuvenation. As a sort of spa treatment, people would go into salt mines to increase their energy and feel a sense of calmness.  One of the main benefits these salt lamps provide is purifying your indoor air. By releasing negative ions when lit, this helps “increase the flow of oxygen to the brain; resulting in higher alertness, decreased drowsiness, and more mental energy”. They are also good for fighting the negative germs that may be in the air. When the negative ions are released, positive ions are removed. By purifying the air, it is preventing many things from reaching your lungs hence alleviating your cough. All of these contribute to purifying the air you are breathing.

Another great benefit of salt lamps is their hygroscopic tendencies. By definition, Dictionary.com says hygroscopic means, “absorbing or attracting moisture from the air”. This helps prevent things like the building up of mold and bacteria. Because salt lamps release a small amount of heat, they are able to attract the water vapor and quickly evaporate it. This helps to alleviate asthma and allergy symptoms.

The color of the salt lamp also has health benefits. Salt lamps give off a dim pink-orange glow, a soothing tone for your eyes in the evening. An orange glow is said to not negatively impact your sleep whatsoever, whereas colors like blue and yellow are said to negatively impact your sleep. Studies also show that a dim orange causes a more neutral and calm mood and helps to increase focus. As you can see, Himalayan Salt lamps aren’t your average old lamp but one that has many benefits.
